Documented capability

A shared control fabric.

Joint Fabric gives multiple authorized controllers a standardized path to co-administer one Matter network. Other 1.6 mechanisms communicate device limits, event history, and contextual thermostat suggestions.

Material limitation

A specification is not an experience.

Release and certification do not establish broad platform support, product availability, enabled features, reliability, adoption, or household consent.

Inference substrate · Vendor model family

Apple’s models show that more AI work can happen on consumer hardware. They do not show that a room reasons as one system—or that every related piece of data stays at home.

Vendor-reported capability

Multimodal inference on capable hardware.

Apple documents two on-device models, including a natively multimodal sparse model designed for its most capable Apple silicon systems.

Material limitation

Local is not an entire data policy.

Apple says its server models run on Private Cloud Compute, whose published rules prohibit retaining request data after a response, including in logs or debugging tools. That is a vendor-stated PCC boundary, not independent verification or a map of feature routing, device-side outputs, surrounding telemetry, backups, downstream stores, or household performance.

Google Home APIs can connect devices and automations. Google describes Gemini for Home as adding broader interpretation, but that does not show that a household works as one dependable system.

Vendor-reported capability

Devices, automations, and an AI layer.

Google documents generally available Home APIs and reports camera interpretation, household queries, activity summaries, and partner services through Gemini for Home.

Material limitation

Breadth is not household authority.

The documents tell us what Google offers, not how reliable, widely used, beneficial, or consensual it is in practice. The Gemini report does not say where its named AI features run, whether they need a network, what happens offline, or how they fail. The Android material we reviewed also does not establish broad Matter 1.6 support.

Digit has been documented doing a specific warehouse job with its fleet software. That is real, bounded work—not evidence of a general-purpose worker.

Customer-confirmed capability

A bounded tote-transfer workflow.

GXO documents Digit moving totes from other mobile robots to conveyors in regular warehouse operations. Agility’s later generation record identifies the deployed generation as Digit 4.

Material limitation

The job extends beyond the body.

The evidence does not establish unrestricted work, broad adoption, or independent economics. Mapping, integration, charging, safety controls, monitoring, maintenance, and recovery remain part of the system.

Documented capability

Name the device. Raise the issue.

Home Assistant’s developer guidance treats devices as identifiable physical or logical units. Its Repairs integration surfaces issues that need attention and can include a path toward resolution.

Material limitation

A device registry is not an ownership ledger.

The reviewed documentation concerns integrated devices and system issues. It does not establish title, warranty, insurance, property access, mechanic dispatch, diagnosis, or payment across unrelated asset categories.

Evidence path

A mechanism is not yet an experience.

We keep the handoffs visible so a released specification, a working demonstration, and widespread use are never treated as the same claim.

  1. 01DefinedThe mechanism is specified.
  2. 02CertifiedAn implementation passes a named program.
  3. 03SupportedAn ecosystem exposes the capability.
  4. 04AvailableHardware or software reaches a named market.
  5. 05UsedPeople can rely on it in practice.

Matter 1.6 at this cutoff: the source set establishes a released specification and two certified software components. It does not establish universal platform support, product breadth, or household use.

Research watch / 6 months What would count as broader Matter 1.6 adoption evidence? Watch certification records, supported products, enabled features, ecosystems, and named markets without treating a standard release as household adoption. Inspect the research horizon →

Method / Review stateWhy something enters this guide
  1. ConsequentialIt changes what an AI system can do, how people encounter it, or the infrastructure around it.
  2. IdentifiableIt has a name, a responsible maker, and a source we can return to.
  3. VerifiableWe can date the claim, show its limits, and distinguish company claims from independent evidence.
  4. IndependentInclusion is not endorsement. No one can pay for a place, a rank, a better assessment, or higher confidence.
